Are the birds MIA?

I am not an avid birder, but my neighbours are, and I do have feeders for the little guys.  But where are the finches and hummingbirds? Our neighbourhood used to have lots of birds in the spring, but this year there are few.  The hummingbirds arrived late and now seem to have disappeared.  The yellow finches were plentiful in past years but are few and far between now ... what gives?

All this talk of the Super Moon .... in June Venus will show the moon who is boss.
I saw this notice at the  Irving Nature park today. Get ready for the Transit of Venus on June 5.

Local wildlife

Suff I saw at Sheldon's Point today

It was a great day to walk in Sheldon's Point.

I see the "hours" sign has been posted - looks like the park will reopen soon.

Coyotes Around the Area

I've been hearing various reports of a coyote seen around the Sheldon's Point area.  Keep your pets on a leash.

Seaside Park

It's a shame the stairs at Seaside Park have fallen into a state of such disrepair.  I think this set of stairs was built about 20 years ago using money from the province and municipality.  A combination of vandalism, neglect, and natural erosion of the surrounding area has caused the stairs to basically crumble onto the breach below.  

I can't image we'll see similar funding for similar projects in the near future.

Everyone's an artist

Sunday was a great day for a stroll on Saint's Rest beach. I happened upon the remains of some sweet artwork left for all to enjoy.  Here's an example below.

Snow fencing or snow plows?

I don't recall ever seeing snow fencing installed during the winter on the overpass on Lancaster Avenue - it is now.   I guess it's an effective way to keep snow off the highway below -  now that there will be fewer plows to do the job.

Irving Nature Park Seasonal Closing

I was in the INP a few weeks ago and couldn't figure out if it was my imagination or if indeed the park was closing earlier than usual.   I am not sure if this is exactly newsworthy, but CBC has picked up on the earlier-than-usual closing time at the park.

Apparently I wasn't the only person caught off guard.

Lou Murphy Park Walking Trails

I had an opportunity today to explore the new walking trails at Lou Murphy Park off Milford Road.  Emera NB contributed significant dollars to the trails and although I didn't have time to explore each trail I definitely was able to take in some great views.

In August,  Emera and the City completed the transfer of the 27 acre property for development into a park.  There is still work to be done, and markings are not entirely clear, but it's a great addition to the Westside and definitely worth visiting.

Newcomers to the Westside

Welcome to New Brunswick and to the Westside Big Tub Botanicals.  I visited their booth at the Queen's Sq. Farmers' Market.  So glad to see a new business moving in.

Fog in the harbour this evening

There was some serious Stephen King fog happening in the harbour around supper time tonight. I have never seen it roll in as fast and as thick as I did tonight.

Ice Fishing at Dominion Park

If this is your idea of fun - it was a great day to do some ice fishing.  The shacks at Dominion Park beach were busy with folks arriving with supplies ... I didn't see anyone leaving with fish.

A Great Start to 2011

Happy New Year. 

Today's great weather was a nice way to start 2011. I took a run over to the Irving Nature Park, lots of activity going on, families, walkers, people kayaking, and wildlife, like these guys.

Stonehammer - First Global Geopark in North America- that's solid!

I received a news release from Stonehammer / NB Museum today announcing that the bid by the local Stonhammer Geopark committee has been accepted. Well done all!  Good news for southern NB tourism.
